Rug Care
For spot cleaning handmade tufted rugs, gentle care is key to maintaining their look and longevity. Here’s a guide to properly clean small stains or spills:
1. Act Quickly
- Address spills as soon as possible to prevent stains from setting. Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as you can—avoid rubbing as it can push the stain deeper into the fibers.
2. Blot with a Mild Solution
- Mix a small amount of mild detergent (like dish soap) with water. Dampen a cloth with the solution and gently dab the stained area, working from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading.
3. Rinse Carefully
- After spot cleaning, dampen a clean cloth with plain water and blot the area to remove any soap residue. Excess soap can attract dirt and leave a sticky residue.
4. Dry Thoroughly
- Use a dry towel to absorb excess moisture, pressing gently. Allow the area to air-dry completely before placing the rug back down. You can speed up drying with a fan, but avoid direct heat.
5. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
- Steer clear of bleach, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals, as these can damage fibers and cause discoloration. Stick with gentle, pH-neutral cleaners.
6. Test in a Hidden Spot
- Before applying any solution, test it on a small, hidden area of the rug to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration.
